Cannabis and parenting is a complex and taboo topic that deserves a more nuanced conversation. Parents who consume cannabis are not inherently bad parents, any more than parents who drink are bad parents. The stigma around cannabis has pervaded this conversation to the point where it’s challenging to have a real discussion about it. In this series, I aim to highlight the reality of parents who consume cannabis, why they do it, and how they approach the conversation with their children.

Cannabis and Fatherhood with John Shute
Cannabis takes me out of a stressful environment I put myself in with work, and allows me to step back and be with my kids.
John Shute, with his snowboarder’s flow and printed shirts, is a man who appears laid-back. But listen to just a snippet of his daily life, and you’ll see a man in relentless pursuit of what he wants.
And what John wants is, well, everything. He’s the founder and CEO of the award-winning agency
PufCreativ, husband to a wife with her own impressive and demanding career, and father to two happy, healthy children, as well as an avid skateboarder, snowboarder, and drummer whose band plays at MJBizCon, the largest cannabis conference in the world.
So how does this self-professed “go-with-the-flow-er” manage a day of never-ending responsibilities? In one word: cannabis.
Navigating An Evolving Relationship with Cannabis and Fatherhood
John has been a fan of the plant for decades. He started smoking in high school, combining a regular smoking routine with extreme sports and a love of music.
He is, and has been for years, a daily consumer. But he describes his past cannabis consumption as “all day, every day”, accompanying a harder partying lifestyle. It was the impending arrival of his firstborn daughter that made him pause.
“I’m a stoked person,” John said. “And I don’t need that to ignite me. I had this epiphany while partying one night, and I had to ask myself: how am I going to be a good dad and balance what’s important to me? How do I work, have my band, do sports, and then have a family on top of that?”
John credits his daughter’s birth as a turning point in his life and a catalyst to change his mindset. “I wanted to be the dad snowboarding with his daughter when he was 75, so how do I get there?”
The Makings of a Canna-Dad
The result is a cannabis routine that looks a little different: infrequent and supportive of his incredibly busy days, rather than non-stop smoking.
“I was really criticized growing up for my consumption,” John said. “I started early. I don’t want my kids to do that. But I also know that things happen as kids get older. If she comes across it, I won’t treat her like I was treated.”
It’s not encouraging underage consumption, but it is a practical mindset from someone with firsthand experience. “I want to be the parent that gets asked for advice and can have an open conversation. I wonder what would have changed for me if I was treated normally, and not like a criminal when people found out I consumed.”
