We Don’t Talk Enough About Cannabis Skincare

I’ve been using cannabinoids in my skincare for nearly five years. Even within the cannabis industry, I’m amazed at how little people know about what cannabis can do for your skin and why it’s valuable in skincare products – let alone people outside the industry! Cannabis skincare is a natural evolution of topicals, but it’s often overlooked. So let’s change that.
I’m pulling back the curtain on my skincare routine and the cannabis skincare products I love in hopes that it inspires you to do the same. As Jonathan Van Ness said, how you care for your skin is how the world sees you – and cannabis can help.

Is Cannabis Skincare Real? The Science
I’m not operating on a wing and a prayer here; evidence shows that stimulating the ECS receptors in your skin can be beneficial. I reached out to licensed esthetician Cecily Hull, owner of Cecily Skincare, to see what benefits cannabinoids can bring to a skincare routine. She said. “Cannabinoids are very beneficial in reducing inflammation and redness for people struggling with acne, rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis. Also, to help heal the skin, for example, after a chemical peel, or perhaps too much sun!” The research backs this up. Your endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a massive regulatory system that has receptors on every organ in your body. We don’t often think of it as such, but your skin (dermis) is your largest organ. When we talk about cannabinoids in skincare, we’re usually talking CBD, CBG, and occasionally, other minor cannabinoids. These products will typically not have THC, since this limits shipping to one specific state (at least for now).CBD in Skincare: The Wonder Cannabinoid
CBD has well-documented anti-inflammatory properties, which are as beneficial for your skin as they are for your muscles and joints. CBD also has strong antioxidant properties, and as any skincare aficionado knows, free radicals are the enemy of beautiful skin. CBD is extensively studied, and research has shown that this cannabinoid has “anti-inflammatory, anti-itching, analgesic, wound healing, and anti-proliferative effects on the skin.” Additionally, emerging research suggests that CBD may prevent sun damage from both UVA and UVB rays. Skincare conditions that CBD has been researched on include:- Acne
- Eczema and affiliated disorders
- Lichen planus
- Melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer
- Melasma
- Prurigo
- Pruritus
- Psoriasis
- Scleroderma and systemic sclerosis
- Seborrheic dermatitis
CBG in Skincare: For A Stronger Skin Barrier
CBG is a cannabinoid that’s rapidly rising in popularity for skincare products as well. Like CBD, it has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. In 2023, Harper’s Bazaar declared CBG was the “cannabinoid steering skincare,” so this isn’t a fringe, pro-cannabis opinion either. Topical application of CBG has been shown to reduce skin inflammation and redness, while also strengthening your skin barrier. Protecting your skin barrier is an important, and often overlooked, goal of skincare because overuse of acids and exfoliating products can harm or destroy your skin barrier. A common problem to see on skincare forums is a young person absolutely wrecking their skin barrier with chemical exfoliants and then wondering why their skin is so red and inflamed. Using CBG topically can help skin heal and stay strong.Requirements for My Skincare Products
Before we dive in, I think it’s helpful to present some context for my skincare routine. Everyone has their own goals in skincare; mine are to support my skin barrier while keeping my skin clear and slowing the visible aging process. As such, my routine is simple, and I am slow to add new products. Some people may have more intense goals or medically strict routines. Take what works for you and leave what doesn’t. In addition to my skincare goals, two other factors drive my buying decisions: I am particularly sensitive to strong scents, and I am allergic to potassium sorbate. Potassium sorbate is a thickener and a preservative that gives products a longer shelf life. It’s incredibly common, used in everything from skincare to edibles and general food products – which makes a lot of products unavailable for me.
5 Cannabis Skincare Products I Love
I have used all of these products for at least a few months. Several of these have been staples in my skincare routine for years. I love each of these for their own reasons, but they all have two things in common: the ingredient list is short and thoughtful, and the companies are small businesses. So much innovation in the cannabis market happens with small businesses, and I love seeing cannabis skincare evolve.Element Apothec Belle Visage Serum 
Cannabinoids: 500 mg CBG and CBG
This was the first cannabis skincare product I ever got my hands on, after I met the founder and CEO Davina Kaonohi.
Element Apothec was my first foray into luxury skincare (as opposed to products like Olay and Neutrogena), and I was instantly hooked. The Belle Visage Serum smells amazing, feels luxurious, and leaves my skin soft and glowing. 500 mg of broad-spectrum CBG and CBG come together with medicinal botanicals to create a face oil that would feel perfectly in place in a high-end facial.
All of Element Apothec’s skincare products are carefully formulated to be high-end skincare products. Their products are also vegan, cruelty-free, and non-toxic. Element Apothec is a certified B-Corp with a major focus on creating sustainable products and packaging – and these are just a few of the reasons I’ve come back to this brand since 2022.
I use this serum about once a week in the evening, usually with my gua sha stone. I’ll jump to twice a week if my skin starts drying out from skiing or other winter activities.

Cannabinoids: Full-spectrum CBD oil
High N Mighty founder Lisa Haddad was kind enough to send me a care package when I lived in a van, with a sampling of High N Mighty’s products. I was instantly hooked on her eucalyptus CBD balm, but that’s a different product review.
Prior to this, I hadn’t put much stock in facial spritzes. But when I moved into a van and lived without a shower for days on end, a quick facial spritz in the morning felt like a little treat. It was a great way to get myself ready for the day when I had extremely limited space, water, and options.
I absolutely love the aroma of High N Mighty Spritz Yo Face Spray. The combination of witch hazel, jasmine, and chamomile creates an incredible blended aroma that is as refreshing as the spray itself.
Potency 710 Gold Serum
Cannabinoids: 500 mg of CBG, 1000 mg of CBD
I have been a die-hard fan of the Belle Visage Serum for years, and for a while, I thought one was all I needed. Then I got a sample of Potency 710 Gold Serum in a goodie bag at MJBiz Con.
I had seen founder Mandy Lile’s posts on LinkedIn about Gold Serum healing skin after spider bites, poison ivy, and skin abrasions, and it made me curious.
Potency 710 Gold Serum has 500 mg of CBG and 1000 mg of CBD, along with a carefully selected list of plant extracts and Vitamin E. This serum has an earthy aroma that reminds me faintly of the mesa after rain. I use it about once a week, usually with my gua sha stone, and recently I’ve been alternating this and the Belle Visage Serum.
Potency 710 Modern Mist
Cannabinoids: CBD and CBG In addition to cannabinoids CBG and CBD, the Potency 710 Modern Mist also has green tea, which has powerful antioxidant properties to calm redness, reduce breakouts, and slow the visible aging process; what’s not to love about that? My first time trying this mist, I found the orange-led aroma overwhelming. But after sharing this feedback with founder Mandy Lile, she sent me another bottle of their revised formula. It has all of the good stuff I loved about the original, with a far more pleasant and subtle scent. I use this spray often, rotating it with my HIGH N MIGHTY spray.Entourus Synergy Body Oil
Cannabinoids: 1200 mg full-spectrum hemp extract
I love a topical, and this Synergy body oil from Entourus has earned its way into my regular routine. Full-spectrum CBD and 40 mg of active phytocannabinoids (as is, taken from the plant itself) created a surprisingly potent oil that leaves my skin feeling silky soft. In addition to full-spectrum CBD oil, Entourus uses “cold-pressed and steam-distilled essential oils” for full botanical skin support.
This is a rescue remedy for my elbows and knees in the middle of winter. It’s not my daily moisturizer, but I reach for it after a particularly long swim session in the chlorine-rich pool or when I want my skin to be silky soft for days.
Signature Amethyst Shimmer Face Cream
Cannabinoids: 3800 mg CBG and 200 mg CBC This isn’t your nightly hyaluronic acid – this is deep hydration that takes all night to absorb and leaves your face feeling soft and silky smooth the next morning. I particularly like this face cream in the winter, when the dry desert air calls for extra moisture. It’s not a daily part of my routine, but when I need a little extra moisture support and want to spend a few minutes with a facial/ lymphatic massage, I reach for this cream. It also has CBC, which I don’t see in many skincare products. I also like that this cream comes in a roller stick for easy application. However, this cream does have a strong odor; the chocolate oil is overpowering. My husband has nicknamed this one the “tootsie roll stuff.”
Balancing Cannabis in Skincare
Skincare is a personalized science based on common best practices. “The biggest issue I see is people using products that are not appropriate for their specific skin issues. Skincare should be personalized,” Cecily told me. “What works for one person may not work for someone else. Most people are not using enough acids for chemical exfoliation. We all need a certain level of chemical exfoliation, but it needs to be personalized for that person’s specific needs.” While I love all the products listed, they’re all intensely hydrating. Using too much moisturizer can increase oil production in your skin. It’s important to pair these with an appropriate acid to ensure your skin doesn’t produce too much oil. “The best ingredients to balance oil production are going to be your alpha/beta hydroxy acids, glycolic and salicylic being the most prevalent. I always suggest a toner or serum that contains AHA/BHAs.” Cecily said.The Evolution of Cannabis Skincare
As someone who cares equally about healthy skincare and holistic ingredients, cannabis skincare presents an exciting new avenue of application for this plant. It is my most fervent hope that we continue to see an evolution of cannabinoids in skincare products. From THC and CBG to CBN, and cannabinoids we hardly yet understand, this plant has the potential to help create so much healing- personally, communally, and within ourselves.
