Why (and How) Dispensary Owners Should Join Their Staff on the Floor

It’s rare to shop at a dispensary and meet the owners. Doesn’t that feel impersonal for a type of business that often promotes community? This is just one of many reasons why independent dispensary owners should be the face of the company they run.

While our to-do lists as dispensary owners are never-ending, the time you spend on the sales floor is priceless — for your customers, your business, and yourself. dispensary owners matt and john

Why You Should Be Highly Visible at Your Dispensary

Being on the dispensary floor with your team builds a greater sense of community among shoppers, budtenders, and dispensary owners. That’s because:

  • You show your team that you don’t see yourself as “too good” for sales. Even if you would never have this thought, your absence creates distance that may fuel those rumors. By being physically present, you build a level of trust and outright care that creates a healthy workplace.
  • You make the cannabis retail experience feel far less impersonal. Instead of cultivating a mere “get what you need and get going” environment, you can make your dispensary a local spot where people are genuinely excited to go. You’ll create a warm, friendly environment that’s especially beneficial if you’re just getting off the ground. Your neighbors will want to see you succeed, and that brings customers through the door every day.
  • You’ll start getting regulars. From the personalized shopping experience to the exciting conversations, you’ll make shoppers significantly more likely to choose you over nearby dispensaries that aren’t as engaging. You know full well as a dispensary owner that it’s far less expensive to retain returning customers than to acquire new ones.
  • You get deeply familiar with the work your team does and how they do it. This matters since you’ll see how the decisions you (or your staff) make actually affect what happens on the sales floor. It also matters since the folks who are actually doing the work often find new and improved ways to do it. That feedback loop between staff and management makes for a good work environment and even happier staff.
  • Honestly, it’s just fun! You might be surprised how much you enjoy getting away from the back office and next to the shelves. If you’re the kind of person who doesn’t find it hard to make conversation, chatting it up with visitors and hanging out with your team will probably feel refreshing, if not outright energizing.

4 Ways Dispensary Owners Can Join Their Staff on the Floor

1. Chat It Up With Customers

The average person loves a good story. As a dispensary owner who navigated all kinds of hurdles to get here, chances are you’ve got tales galore. When you’re on the floor with your budtenders, take some time to strike up actual conversations with your customers.

Don’t just ask “What are you looking for?” Instead, start with, “Hey, nice to see you here. Where are you visiting from?” If they’re your neighbor, great — time to build some meaningful community! If not, you’ll get valuable insight into why someone makes the trek to your dispensary over closer stores. Plus, a fun conversation can be among your visitors’ highlights and give them reason to return.

2. Be a Budtender

Chances are, you started your dispensary because you’re passionate about cannabis. Leverage your love of the plant to listen to your customers’ needs and recommend products.

In other words, just be a budtender. You’ll show your team that you don’t think their work is “beneath you” while creating natural moments for rich customer conversations that help make you the face of the business.

3. Conduct ID Checks

When you see the address on someone’s ID, that’s your opportunity to say something like, “Oh, I love your town! The food scene there is incredible.” You’ll be making meaningful, exciting conversation while doing work not normally associated with dispensary owners.

Conducting ID checks yourself is a surprising yet powerful triple win. You and your soon-to-be-regulars get to know each other since you’re literally their first impression of your dispensary. You associate your dispensary with an actual person (yourself). You signal to your team that you’re happy to do the kind of work they do.

4. Work the Register

If you don’t want to be completely on the dispensary floor or you lean a bit less social, stay behind the counter for customer checkout. Since customers are on their way out and at the front of a line of other shoppers looking to check out, conversations here can only last so long.

Of course, you can still make these chats plenty engaging. Talk about your relationship with the products they’re buying, or ask them what they’re getting up to next. This isn’t that common an experience at checkout, and it’ll make a lasting impression.

5. Be Present and Be Yourself

Seriously — it’s this simple. You can occasionally hang out on your dispensary floor without actually doing any work. Think of it as taking a fun break from all the back-office work while still contributing to your dispensary’s success. Use this break time to get to know your customers just by approaching them as yourself. No pretensions, no putting any guard up — just chat with folks like you’re making new friends. In my experience, you might actually be!

Taking these easy steps to get out of the office and onto your dispensary floor makes a difference for each and every person who makes your operations work. You’ll build community, grow your customer base, make your team happy, and set yourself up for success.
