Your Weed Can’t Be USDA Organic. Four Things to Look For
-
The Certification Standards
Clean, Natural, and Craft carry no standard behind them. OCal, Clean Green, and the other programs do. GreenState has
already mapped out what these certifications require, including inspections, recordkeeping, and approved-input lists. A program name you can look up beats a nice word on a package.
-
The Certificate of Analysis, Including the Date
Every legal product has one. Find the pesticide panel, then confirm the batch number on the certificate matches the batch in your hand. A brand that makes this hard to find is telling you something.
-
Who Grew the Flower
Indoor, greenhouse, and sun-grown can all be excellent. What matters is whether the company can name the farm. Anyone who cannot answer that has outsourced the question you are asking.
-
Consistency Across 3+ Purchases
This step costs a month. Buy the same product three times and pay attention. If the experience swings, the process behind it swings too. Consistency is the cheapest quality signal a consumer has.
Your Weed Can’t Be USDA Organic. But it Can Be Certified
Operators should read the same trend. Once the federal question settles, the thing separating companies stops being access and becomes proof. Certification puts an outside body in position to confirm a process is what the company claims. Plenty of operations will not survive that inspection, and the ones that do will say so on the package, in front of the customer.
I have carried one phrase since the Corps. The standard is the standard. It does not move because conditions got difficult, or because the category is young, or because everyone quietly agreed to grade this one product on a curve.
Your grocery store has an organic aisle because enough people asked the same question at the same time until somebody had to answer it in writing. Cannabis has not had that moment yet. It will, and it will come from customers who read labels everywhere else and finally start reading this one.
Ask the question at the counter. That is what starts it.
About the Author
Sean Oganesyan is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and the operator brands trust when cultivation has to perform under real pressure. As the founder of Surreal Yields, he has spent nearly two decades designing and scaling cannabis operations where consistency, yield, and product quality are controlled outcomes, not variables. Over the course of his career, he has helped design, build, and optimize more than 3 million square feet of cultivation infrastructure, from early-stage indoor grows to large commercial cultivation environments.
He has worked alongside leading brands including STIIIZY, Cookies, Dr. Greenthumb, Originals, and 22Red, where he also served as a co-founder. In those environments, Oganesyan has built a reputation for bringing structure to complexity, turning cultivation into a disciplined, repeatable system capable of performing at scale.
His approach is exacting. Variables are controlled. Systems are enforced. Decisions are driven by data. Through automation, environmental controls, sensor-driven monitoring, and operational intelligence, he helps operators reduce variability and improve performance with every cycle.
As an OCal-certified cultivation organization, Surreal Yields advocates for standards that prioritize transparency, process integrity, and measurable outcomes. Oganesyan’s philosophy is straightforward: in a market full of claims, only measurable quality holds.
