Haschtag Strwbrry Fields Forever Hash: A Ganjier Review

Hash in the Winter

Winter in Canada sucks. No way around the fact. As I write this, it’s 2:00 pm, -20°C(-4°F), and I’ve already shovelled my driveway three times today. It’s bleak times like these that I question why I still live on this frozen piece of granite up here, but as always… hash helps.

There’s little to do here during the deep freezes unless you’re a yeti, which leaves many Canadians turning to the sauce to steady their nerves after a speed round of “Where’s the Road?” through the snow. As much as my Irish roots love a good ‘two-finger neat’ to help blunt the frost, it’s hash that’s become my brand of fortification during the winter months.

Nothing warms my soul like knowing I’ve got a hunk of good sticky to look forward to, and I’m happy to say that the sentiment is catching on. I take a great amount of pride in doing my part to help you, the reader, get the highest quality bang for your buck possible, but it genuinely takes a village.

The evolving race to the bottom has flooded the market with record levels of boof, which means true bargains basically don’t exist, and in fact, the cheapest is often always the worst value. Slowly and surely, as popularity grows, quality has been crawling in the right direction.

Thanks to the amazing educators on the front line, consumers are slowly becoming informed and enlightened. As I alluded to, cannabis and its plethora of products continue to steadily gain popularity here in Canada.

As we continue to collectively develop our understanding of the plant, more consumers are becoming wise to cut-and-run sales tactics and the brands that use them. Shifting focus back onto producers who have abandoned ‘race to the bottom’ strategies and are looking to foster genuine experiences for their consumers by creating something valuably unique.

About EXKA/XK

The team I’ve chosen to give a nod to this month is EXKA/XK, based out of Mirabel, Quebec. These guys are a fantastic example of this welcome trend in quality. For this review, I’ve selected one of their ‘Haschtag’ series of premium traditional dry sieve hash – “Haschtag Strwbrry”.

I’ll say up front that this hash was exceptional and provided an incredible experience to a seasoned hash smoker. Recommended to me out of the blue by a good friend, I walked into this review with little to no knowledge of the team or product, which is the way I like it

Upon opening my jar, I was greeted by an old friend. A nostalgic and complexly fragrant old friend in the form of a malleable, soft and fresh piece of pressed hash. An absolute unicorn in our legal market here in Canada today, and a welcome breath of fresh air in a forest of dry, stale and poorly grown Snicklefritz.

XK – “Haschtag Strwbrry” Traditional Hash: A Ganjier Review

SAP Score = 91/100

Aroma – 8.5

Upon opening my jar, I was immediately treated to a pleasantly unique dessert course of a mixed berry/ chocolate ice cream sundae, with a side of classic ‘Fun Dip’ sprinkled on top. Very nostalgic and very complex in its presentation.

Upon peeling it open, there was a layer of pure sugar akin to a strawberry/lemonade ‘Big Foot’ candy. As I bathed my nose in it, it was easy to find the oily, earthy and robust qualities that I look for in my hash aromas. Aromas came across as complex without being overwhelming or unbalanced. Always a huge plus in my book.

This strain is aptly named “Haschtag Strwbrry” with its rich, berry-forward tone, which I always bring attention to as a consumer shopping with intent.

It’s important to flag that, as I inspected the packaging, I realized this hash may be ‘terpene enhanced’, from the words “infused hash”, but I couldn’t get any more info. If this is the case, however, it has been done tastefully and is still an aroma that I implore you to experience.

This was also one of the freshest pieces of hash I’ve experienced in the legal market in Canada.

Appearance – 7.8

Visually, things started out on the right foot as I shook hands with a temple ball style of dark walnut brown hash. No swirl or speckling noted with its uniform colour and consistency. I was confident that the ball would act like Play-Doh.

As expected, it was fresh, malleable, gummy and clean. Simply beautiful in the hand. I was easily able to roll it into a snake and manipulate it the exact way I wanted to. The softest I’ve come across in our legal market.

As far as ‘the melt’ went, I had less action than I expected, but it did toil and bubble slightly when the heat source was almost touching. Notably intensified the aroma but softened and crumbled more than melted. Overall, a fantastic piece of hashish.

Flavour – 7.8

Many of the aromas follow through, including creamed berries with a distinct chocolate and sugar tone. Very pleasant with a nostalgic tone for me as a huge fan of ice cream. Not as complex as the aroma, but just by a tick.

It had a distinct and overwhelming tone of berries, particularly raspberry, as well as a powerful sugary overtone to it, which masked some of the prominent hues from the aroma. It’s a flavour and aroma palette that I’ve happily come across before.

As far as the smoke went, it was incredibly smooth and easy on the lungs. No trouble at all on a deep inhale. An outstanding greyish white burn without any petrified hash snake left.

I could tell that it melted nicely into the cannabis in the proper zone, which was a surprise given the melt test. It left little resin or residue to clean up or deal with when smoked in a hash kettle. Ideal intensity and flare without being overwhelming or feeling fake on the palette. Plenty to engage the senses.

The only area I was even remotely surprised by was the length of time that the flavour lingered on the mouth. With great aroma comes great responsibility, and I was expecting a much longer and more coating experience. I’m the type of guy who wants to taste hash for the next few hours after I puff. This did, however, provide a smooth, rich, robust smoke and flavour while held in the mouth, one that I immediately wanted more of.

Experience – 8.6

Every session with the ‘Haschtag Strwbrry’ has put me in a more balanced and positive mood. As someone who battles anxiety and neuroplastic pain, a calmer, quieter and more focused brain is pivotal to my day going positively. It’s why my morning hash joints are deeply therapeutic and borderline spiritual.

My time with this hash left me with a notably positive experience. A long-lasting, calm and quiet ride that left me uniquely relaxed in body and therefore stimulated in mind. With an experience that was calmly intense and uniquely refreshing, I highly recommend trying some of XK’s – ‘Haschtag Strwbrry’ today.
