Green Wednesday. Thanksgiving weekend. Black Friday. Cyber Monday. The cannabis industry’s holiday surge is compressed into a few days that can generate some of the highest single-day revenue of the year.
Most operators approach this week with a promotional calendar. Discounts, bundles, loyalty point events. Revenue spikes. The week looks great in the monthly report.
And then January arrives. The hangover is not from the holiday itself. It is from the fact that most customers who came in during Green Wednesday and throughout Green Week were never converted into long-term buyers.
Who Actually Shows Up During Green Wednesday & Green Week
Thanksgiving week traffic breaks into three groups:
- Your regulars, who were going to buy anyway and are happy to take advantage of the specials.
- Occasional buyers prompted by the promotional energy, some of whom are close to becoming regulars with the right follow-up.
- Price-driven shoppers who showed up specifically for the deep discounts and have low baseline loyalty.
Most promotional strategies do not distinguish between these groups. All three get treated the same way. That is the missed opportunity.
The customers worth the most attention during Green Week are not the ones buying the most that day. They are the ones most likely to still be buying in January and February.
The Five Weeks in the Holidays That Decide January
The stretch between Thanksgiving and New Year’s is the highest-leverage retention window of the year. Traffic is elevated. Gift-giving occasions bring in new customers who have a natural reason to discover products they love. The operators who win February are the ones who used this window to build relationships, not just move product.
Instead of running a purely promotional calendar for Green Week, build a parallel retention calendar that runs alongside it.
- On Green Wednesday: prioritize lead capture. Every new customer should be asked for their email or phone number. The noise of the week makes this easy to skip. Do not skip it. A Green Wednesday customer you can reach later is worth significantly more than one you cannot.
- Day one after the surge: segment new customers from the week by purchase category. You know what product type brought them in. That is personalization data you can use immediately.
- Within 24 hours: send a welcome message to first-time buyers. Not a deal. A message that acknowledges their visit, explains the loyalty program and how to earn rewards, and tells them what to expect from you going forward.
- At 10 days: give them a reason to return. A modest incentive tied to their purchase history is appropriate. The goal is a second visit before December is over.
- At 30 days: check who came back and who did not. Non-returners enter your standard reengagement cadence. Returners start to look like regulars.
The One Metric Worth Tracking After Green Wednesday
Of everyone who visited for the first time during Thanksgiving week, what percentage made a second purchase before January 31st?
If that number is below 50%, your post-holiday retention program needs work. If it is above 50%, you’re doing something right and should double down on it.
This single metric tells you more about the long-term value of your holiday promotions than any single-week revenue figure.
A Caution on Dispensary Loyalty During the Holidays
Double points, bonus rewards, and tiered earning during Green Week can generate short-term excitement. The risk is creating habitual point-seekers rather than habitual buyers. A customer who comes back in December specifically for the double points may not come back in January when the promotion ends.
The better use of a loyalty program during the holidays is as a retention trigger, not a promotional hook. Give long-term customers an unpredictable recognition reward that acknowledges their history with your store. That type of touchpoint builds emotional connection rather than transactional behavior.
The holiday season gives you the traffic. Retention work turns that traffic into a January customer base that does not require promotions to show up.
January Is Already Being Decided
The follow-ups you send, the second visits you earn, and the contact information you capture between now and December 31st will determine what January looks like. That month is notoriously low in revenue across cannabis retail, and the operators who weather it best built their loyal base during the holiday surge.
Green Week is not a strategy. It is an opportunity. The strategy is what you do with it.
