A Better Cure: Study Shows Significant Impacts on Profitability and Product Quality With Calyx Cure System

Cannabis Research Center Confirms in Third-Party Study That Calyx’s Cure Bags Retain More Moisture, Terpenes, and Potency During Post-Harvest Storage

SALT LAKE CITY—Dec. 2, 2025—A new study from Calyx Containers and the Cannabis Research Coalition (CRC) confirmed the outsize impact of post-harvest cannabis storage. For product quality and profitability, the measures are eye-opening.

In a two-part, 16-week study focused on “Peaches & Cream,” a cannabis strain known for its terpene complexity, Calyx Containers’ self-curing flat-bottom, side gusset pouch, the Calyx Cure, retained 362 grams more moisture and up to 22% more terpenes per 100-pound batch than turkey bags and other similar packaging products.

Researchers tracked water activity, moisture content, terpene retention, decarboxylation, pigment degradation and trichome maturity across a standard curing period, revealing that the Calyx Cure consistently held cannabis at more stable internal conditions, minimizing trichome degradation and product weight loss while protecting the cannabis flowers’ full sensory profile.

Water activity and moisture content remained more consistent in the Calyx Cure pouch, thanks to its ability to resist ambient fluctuations in relative humidity (RH). While comparable bags lost 272 and 295 grams of flower weight, the Calyx Cure recorded a positive retention of 362 grams. That difference alone represents more than $2,300 in product value per 100-pound batch at a $5-per-gram price point.

Another standout finding was terpene preservation. Limonene, one of the most volatile and aromatic monoterpenes, reduced by  just 11% in the Calyx Cure. In a competitor product, the same compound fell by over one-third. β-myrcene showed a 21% drop in Calyx, compared to 37% in the competitor bag. The data suggests lower oxygen permeability and tighter vapor control in the Calyx Cure bags helped mitigate terpene loss due to evaporation and sorption.

The study also found stronger retention of cannabinoids with the Calyx Cure’s technology. Flower cured in these containers showed a higher percentage of decarboxylated THC by the end of the eight-week cure. This indicates a more controlled and complete conversion of THCA to THC, resulting in better preservation of potency.

For growers, these findings point to major advantages in both quality and yield. Traditional curing methods can lead to under- or over-drying, terpene loss, and inconsistent potency. Calyx’s system reduces those risks by creating a more predictable internal environment, eliminating the need for daily burping or added humidity packs.

Simon Knobel, CEO of Calyx Containers, said the findings validate years of internal testing and customer feedback.

“At Calyx, we’ve always believed packaging is more than just a vessel,” said Knobel. “It’s a tool for preserving the quality and integrity of cannabis. This research confirms our bags help growers protect their product through the most vulnerable phase of the post-harvest process.”

Knobel added that Calyx will continue investing in research and development to support cultivators with solutions based on science, not guesswork.

“Growers, manufacturers and the entirety of the supply chain deserve better than trial and error. We’re here to give them technology that honors the craft and protects their bottom line,” he said. “This study gives cultivators real, actionable data that shows how the right technology can preserve not only weight and value, but also the character and potency of the flower.”

The Calyx Cure lineup is available now for cultivators looking to refine their curing protocols. The system is designed to reduce labor, prevent quality loss and help cannabis reach consumers as fresh and potent as the day it was harvested.
