Roller Derby & Cannabis: Interview with Bethany Semeiks

This interview first appeared in the Sports Edition of Fat Nugs Magazine, released May 2024.

Bethany “B-Train” Semeiks found roller derby during college in 2006. After graduating from college with a Bachelor’s in Environmental Science from the University of Maryland and a Master’s of Business Administration focused on Marketing and Business Strategy from the University of California, Irvine, today Bethany is in the process of completing her Master’s of Cannabis Science and Therapeutics from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy.

Bethany played women’s hockey and found the transition to roller derby a natural fit and a great physical outlet. After dominating roller derby for years, she’s moved to coaching the next generation of roller derby all-stars. Bethany co-developed Wicked Skatewear with her best friend, Strychnine. After a few successful years, her focus shifted to the cannabis industry, and today she is works at FloraWorks

It was in 2017 that Bethany first began to incorporate CBD into her health and wellness routines to help with soreness after lifting weights. It wasn’t until a year or so later when she got her hands on quality products to take at night to help with her sleep that she really incorporated cannabinoids into her daily routine.

Bethany is a tireless cannabis advocate and is involved with the non-profit Athlete for Care as well as researching medicine for our Veterans with her cannabis pharmacy education focusing on cannabinoids and concussions.

An Interview with Bethany Semeiks

How does cannabis relate to wellness in your life?

It quiets the crazy lady in my brain that doesn’t STFU, helps me sleep through the night, improves recovery, and reduces low back pain.

What do you do in the cannabis industry?

I’m on the Flora Works sales team! I love being able to provide manufacturers, brands, and patients with the cannabinoid ingredients they need to make fire products. [Editor’s note: position updated from original print]

How has cannabis positively affected your life?

I help people find the medicine they need to live healthier lives and I love when they feel better. Same goes for me too! I love trying new stuff that’ll reduce pain and improve sleep.

What advice would you give to younger you?

Give yourself grace. Things will not go as planned and it’s okay.

What are your favorite cannabinoids?

CBG and CBC! I take CBD, CBN, and Multi-cannabinoids about an hour before bed. If I’m having trouble falling asleep, then I’ll grab a NuLeaf Naturals tincture for a faster delivery time.

What inspires you?

The ambition of everyone in the industry pushing it forward. Whether it be those involved in politics, cannabis as medicine, or creating innovative products, keep going!
