How to Be A Safe Consumer of Psilocybin Mushrooms in a Shifting Landscape

There is a rise in new research on psilocybin mushrooms and their ability to have positive effects on mental health, depression, and much more. With progress, it seems only a matter of time until we see labs being held to the same standards as restaurants and testing becomes more frequent. The industry will probably even come up with some trendy new name like “boom-tenders” for the dispensary workers who will help guide you through dosing and strain selection.

But until then, what should you know as a consumer? How do you know you’re practicing safe use and that your product is safe to eat? Let’s explore these questions in more depth.

Is Psilocybin Safe for Me?

Many people who sell mushrooms will never tell you that psilocybin is not for everyone. While safe for most mentally sound adults with no history of illness or cardiac problems, the reality of life is that most of us are on some form of medication. With depression and mental health issues on the rise, you need to be aware of your medications and their interactions with psilocybin. Unfortunately, many doctors either decry the benefits of mushrooms or have little understanding of the interactions between psilocybin and medication.

Thankfully, sites like go.drugbank.com have a pretty comprehensive list of medications that have negative interactions with psilocybin, presented in an easy-to-understand way. Even those not on medication should be aware of the potential dangers of consumption. Extreme anxiety, undiagnosed mental conditions, or those who experience low blood pressure or cardiac issues should consult a professional before jumping into things.

Are Psychedelic Mushrooms Safe to Eat?

This is a very important question. Very few people who sell mushrooms will tell you all their improper practices, but there are a few things you can do to help spot suspicious products.

The first thing to remember is that you are the consumer and you have the power to refuse a product! Ask questions; you can usually sniff out a bull shit artist with a few simple inquiries. Questions such as:

  • Are you the grower?
  • How do you store your mushrooms?
  • How were these dried?

Mushrooms should be stored in a light-proof, air-tight container in an area free of moisture with moderate temperatures. Never store your mushrooms in the fridge or freezer! The moisture can cause a multitude of problems in regards to bacteria and mold. Not to mention that psilocybin actually breaks down faster at colder temperatures than at temperatures exceeding 100 degrees.

Remember, Mushrooms are Food!

Imagine someone offering to sell you a bag of chips from a larger bag of chips that has been continuously opened and closed, stored in a backpack, or god knows where, and was handled without the use of gloves or tongs. Would you eat those chips? Likely not, but this is exactly what happens to most mushrooms on the market before they are sold to you to eat.

While this practice is all too common, you can still spot a few telltale signs that someone’s product may not be safe to consume. Do a visual inspection of the product and the seller. Is the person selling you mushrooms generally well-kept with clean hands and nails? Don’t be afraid to ask people to wash their hands or use sanitizer.

Does the product look clean, and is it free from any suspicious powdery-looking substance anywhere on it? Do they smell like dried mushrooms and are free from musty or foul-smelling odors? Are they completely dry and able to break easily with pressure?

If the answer is no to any of these questions, politely decline and be prepared for a pushy dealer to give you every excuse why those mushrooms are safe. They often are not, and it’s always best to err on the side of caution.

How Do I Safely Consume Psilocybin Mushrooms?

The old tried and true saying, ”set and setting,” still stands true to this day. Be sure your mindset is good and your setting is a calm atmosphere with trusted people around you, and at least one sober person who can assist you should negative effects arise.

Do not mix psilocybin with alcohol or other substances that can compound effects. While marijuana can be enjoyed with psilocybin, its consumption should be kept light and never through oral delivery like edibles or tinctures. Sites like firesideproject.org even have a psychedelic hotline (623) 473-7433 if you feel you need further assistance.
