There are moments in life when the world slows down. When the noise fades, the edges soften, and you remember what it means to just be.
For my 50th birthday, I wanted and needed that kind of moment; something to recharge my soul, somewhere unforgettable. So, my partner Cecily and I flew into Puerto Vallarta and headed north along the jagged coastline of Nayarit, winding past palm forests and sleepy fishing villages, until we reached the small beach town of Punta de Mita.
There, tucked between the jungle hills and the Pacific, sits Susurros del Corazón, which is a part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, and easily one of the most beautiful, serene, and service-focused places I’ve ever stayed in my life. This wasn’t just a trip; it was a full-body exhale.
My Time at Susurros del Corazón
Arrival Without Chaos
I’ve stayed in dozens of luxury resorts over the years, and almost all of them share the same flaw: the lobby check-in gauntlet. The clipboard signatures. The passport scans. The waiting while someone slowly types your name into a system. The awkward conversation about upgrades and packages and timeshares. It’s a buzzkill.
Susurros del Corazón doesn’t do buzzkills. They don’t even have a lobby check-in, which absolutely blew me away! You pull up to the open-air porte-cochère and they greet you not with a line or a form, but with a perfectly chilled welcome cocktail, spiked with tequila if you choose. No plastic wristbands; there was no plastic at the resort anywhere to be found. No time-share pitches or transactional shuffle. Just a smile, a drink, and someone saying, “Let’s get you to your room.”
Within minutes, we were in a golf cart gliding through the lush coastal, almost jungle-like grounds. The Pacific glittered through the palms as we curved past beautiful guest houses or terraced casitas tucked into the lush vegetation. Our bags had vanished, handled silently.
And that’s the rhythm here, it’s frictionless. Every detail is invisible, and every need anticipated.
Your Own Personal Team
One of the most striking things about Susurros del Corazón is how personal everything feels. From the moment you arrive, you’re paired with a dedicated concierge team who quietly, seamlessly handles everything from dining reservations, excursions, spa treatments, transportation, and even off-site adventures. They even did their research on us both and talked about our jobs and things we loved; social media is wild!
The staff doesn’t hover, doesn’t hustle. They just appear when you need them, almost like magic. For us, that magic was nothing we’d ever truly experienced before.
One of those magicians was Kevin Bryan Moreno Bermúdez. Kevin was everywhere and nowhere at once, always a step ahead, somehow knowing what we needed before we did. He and the rest of the team of employees at the resort embodied what true hospitality should be. It wasn’t just service, it was care.
Rooms That Feel Like A Dream
Our room was less like a hotel suite and more like a private coastal sanctuary. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors opened onto a sprawling terrace with sweeping views of the Pacific. Inside, handcrafted Mexican textiles, rich wood accents, and minimalist design created a sense of effortless luxury.
Every detail had been considered: a perfectly curated minibar, spa-like rain shower, plush robes, even the way the sunlight spilled across the stone floor at golden hour. It felt like someone had designed a space specifically to calm your nervous system. And it worked.
There was no noise. No stress. No urgency. Just the sound of waves, the smell of salt, and the knowledge that everything you could possibly want was taken care of. It was the heaven-like getaway I’d always dreamed of, and spending my 50th birthday there couldn’t have been more perfect.
Freedom to Be Yourself
As someone who incorporates cannabis into my daily wellness routine, traveling can be tricky – not because I flaunt it, but because discretion and respect matter. Many resorts make that difficult. Here, it wasn’t.
I was able to quietly medicate each day without anyone noticing or making it an issue. There were no side-eyes, no questions, no judgment. I simply had the freedom to be fully myself, to enjoy the beauty around me with the clarity and calm the plant gives me.
That sense of freedom when traveling overseas is rare, and it made the experience even more powerful.
A Feast for Every Sense
Susurros del Corazón takes food as seriously as it takes everything else. Each restaurant on the property is its own experience. Hyper-local, ingredient-driven, and deeply rooted in Mexican coastal tradition.
Breakfasts were leisurely affairs on the terrace, coffee was delivered at the exact time of my choosing every morning, and tropical fruit glistened like jewels next to warm, toasted bread, sweet cream, and just-squeezed juice. Dinners ranged from wood-grilled seafood caught hours before to handmade tortillas puffed up like tiny miracles over open flames.
The flavors were vibrant, soulful, and deeply respectful of the region. Even something as simple as ceviche became an art form. And the cocktails? Perfection. Whether it was a smoky mezcal old-fashioned or a spicy pineapple margarita, everything was balanced, bright, and beautiful.
Sunsets, Sunrises, and Soul Reset
If the service and food are the heart of Susurros, then the setting is its soul. Every day seemed painted by a different artist. One morning, the sun rose in soft sherbet pastels; the next, it burst out of the sea like molten gold. Evenings brought jaw-dropping sunsets that bled from tangerine to magenta to deep violet as pelicans skimmed the glassy water.
We spent hours by the infinity pool just watching the colors change, skin warm from the sun, hearts unspooling from the static of everyday life. There’s something about this coastline and the way the jungle meets the sea, the way the world seems to exhale around you. It resets you.
It’s impossible not to slow down here. And that’s the gift.
Punta de Mita: A Town With a Soul
As intoxicating as the resort is, it’s worth leaving the bubble, if only for an afternoon.
We ventured into Punta de Mita, the charming little surf town just down the road, where cobblestone streets wind between colorful shops and beachfront taquerías. We wandered with no agenda, popping into restaurants on the water, enjoying margaritas, browsing handmade jewelry and handmade bags, hats, and clothes from street artists, and listening to stories with travelers from around the world.
It’s the kind of place that reminds you travel isn’t just about consuming, it’s about connecting. About being part of a place, even briefly, and letting it leave its mark on you.
Service Redefined
What sets Susurros del Corazón apart from anywhere else I’ve been is simple: EVERYTHING!
Luxury can be bought. Design can be copied. But soul can’t be faked, and this place has it in abundance. From the gardeners who greeted us each morning with warm smiles, to the waitstaff who remembered our names, to Kevin and the concierge team who made us feel like the only guests on earth, the entire experience felt deeply human. It wasn’t just about being served.
It was about being seen.
The Farewell We Didn’t Want to Make
Leaving Susurros felt like waking from a perfect dream you weren’t ready to end. There was no rush to check out, no line at the desk, no impersonal handshake. Just a warm goodbye, a hug, and the quiet understanding that we would be back. Because you don’t really “leave” a place like this. It stays with you in the way your shoulders drop when you think about it, in the way your pulse slows when you remember the sound of the waves and the comfort of a perfect vacation.
It becomes part of you, and neither of us wanted to leave. It was a moment I didn’t want to face, and I’d live there for the rest of my life, if I could.
I’ve traveled a good bit to Mexico’s resorts on both coasts. I’ve stayed at some of the world’s most celebrated resorts. And I can say without hesitation: Susurros del Corazón is in a league of its own.
It is beauty without pretension. Luxury without noise. Service without ego. It is, quite simply, what hospitality should be. If you ever find yourself yearning for a place that will quiet the world and remind you what it means to feel truly taken care of, save your money and go! Go with someone you love. Go to celebrate, to heal, to breathe.
Go to Susurros del Corazón. Because some places don’t just host you: they hold you.
